TRAITOR TO THE THRONE (REBEL OF THE SANDS #2) – ALWYN HAMILTON

This is not about blood or love. This is about treason.
The Rebel Prince's message has spread across the desert but, when a surprise encounter turns into a kidnapping, Amani finds herself betrayed in the cruellest manner possible.
Stripped of her powers and identity, Amani must return to her desert-girl's instinct for survival. For the Sultan's palace is a dangerous one, and the harem is a viper's nest of suspicion, fear and intrigue. Just the right place for a spy to thrive...

At the end of the first book, Amani and the rebels had successfully defeated the Miraji and foreign forces, Noorsham escaped with his life and control of his own mind and Ahmed had gained a reputation throughout the country. Stories whispered around campfires of the legendary Rebel Prince with the Blue-Eyed Bandit at his side and the people behind him.

Now, almost a year later, Amani recovers from a gunshot wound, Jin is away spying on foreign leaders and the rebellion has grown to almost beyond the control of Ahmed and his commanders. When Amani wakes up on a ship, hauled away from the rebels that had become her family, to be sold into the Sultan’s palace, she is determined to risk her life to bring the tyrant’s cruel regime to the ground. With Jin missing and the welfare of her friends unknown who can tell what might happen.

I was so excited to start reading this, to see what new trouble Amani would get herself (and Jin) into, and to hopefully see Amani really step up as a leader. And, as I find myself saying so often, I was not let down. Traitor to the Throne really sees Amani building as a character, growing in confidence. She is reckless and stupid (in the best way possible) while also being caring and hilarious. I love her sharp tongue and kickass nature.

But if we are talking about kickass, I can’t NOT think of Shazad... I would follow that commander into the pits of hell if I had to. Like a sister to Amani, she is the perfect leader, strong but kind, ambitious but not power hungry. And she is also downright hilarious...

“It wasn’t technically disobedience if we’d never been forbidden from doing it. Even though we both knew that excuse would fly just about as well as either of us could.”

And Jin! Lovable, sweet Jin. He honestly makes this book just that bit more remarkable! The whole time I was begging for more Amani and Jin moments. The way Jin trusts Amani to both save the day and get herself into trouble is adorable. How he knows her in a way no others ever had and accepts her for it instead of doing what everyone else did; trying to train her to hold her tongue or respect her superiors or stay out of trouble. Their relationship is beautiful!  There is only acceptance and admiration between the two and it makes me feel giddy every time.

Full of twists and turns that you don’t see until they’re punching you in the face, alongside witty narration and hilarious sarcasm, this book is the perfect read - for anyone!

This second instalment makes you question everything you thought you knew about Amani’s world. And that ending really just killed me dead. It is going to be a long and painful wait for the next one. This is a major must read trilogy!
