The second installment of the Under the Never Sky trilogy took all the pain, uncertainty, denial and despair, wrapped in a gorgeous little box of sweetness and bliss, and lay it out in front of me with a little bow.  I am struggling to wrap my head around the complex beauty of this book and the world inside of it. 

The story picks up where the first book ended, with Aria back on the outside, Perry shouldering the responsibilities of being Blood Lord of the Tides and neither of them any closer to finding a way away from the destructive force which threatens to rip their lands, and their lives, apart – the Aether.  Reunited at last, Perry takes Aria back to his home and tribe, the Tides.  But Aria is only half Outsider and the Tides refuse to warm to the mole feeding off their resources.  With dissent within the tribe growing against Perry and his Dweller friend and the Aether storms continually growing increasingly violent, Perry struggles to feed his people and shelter them from the worst of the storms.  But rumours of the Still Blue have spread – a land free from the storms that rip through homes and crops – and Aria is determined to find out where it is.  

In this book you really see a different side of all of the characters, they develop so much and just have more essence.  Aria is a kickass female who has really grown into a woman, she can look after herself, doesn’t need the approval of anyone and can make the tough decisions.  She has grown from the timid, sheltered and naive girl that stumbled determinedly through the first book into a confident, strong female.  I feel like Aria really had a purpose in this book, she is driven by more than survival or finding her mother, she wants to protect the people that she cares about and will do anything to make sure that they are safe.

But, I think if anyone is to take the medal for the best example of character development it would have to be Perry. Taking on one hell of a lot of responsibilities as Blood Lord, Perry learns what it is to be a leader. Perry becomes a much more interesting character to follow as he accepts every challenge thrown at him and doesn’t give up when things don't go the way they should have. Now at the forefront of the tribe, the man they go to for anything, Perry is tossed into a whirlpool of constant worry for his people and all that he has to do for them.

The relationship between Aria and Perry is beautiful and sweet right from the start and so real, full of uncertainty when they are apart but unwavering when together. Put under strain with the distrust of the Tides and the devious words of a manipulative foot soldier, Aria and Perry sloughed through all the ups and downs of relationships and came out more united because of it. They are a couple that can only be described as beyond adorable!

Another thing that I loved about the characters in this novel was the plethora of secondary characters that deserve the limelight, the greatest of all being, of course, Roar. Genuine and thoughtful, Roar is the embodiment of intimidating men that are really teddy bears. He is sweet and gentle and so in love, it is so cute. In this novel we see a new vulnerability in Roar that we hadn’t seen much of in the first book and it broke my heart. Roar is the ultimate character – I would a read a story about him brushing his teeth if I could!

Through the Ever Night made my heart melt and beat like crazy, it made me laugh through some pages and ugly cry through others. I don’t think my heart can take more of this torture...

A good dream was something you clung to until the last moment before waking.

This book is jam packed with twists that I wish didn’t happen, deceit, heartbreak and I am pretty sure I was in denial for the last half of the book at least! It killed me a little bit on the inside - the perfect book for anyone wishing to escape the world.
